Why You Can't Focus Anymore (and How to Get It Back)

Maya Okonkwo

If you feel like you can't focus the way you used to, you're not imagining it, and you're not broken. Your attention was slowly retrained, on purpose, by products built to keep it moving.

Here's the mechanism, from someone who worked on these systems. Every time you check your phone and get a little hit of something new, a like, a message, a fresh piece of content, your brain gets a tiny reward. Do that a few hundred times a day for years, and your brain learns a lesson: focus is boring, switching is rewarding. So the moment a task gets hard, your hand reaches for the phone before you've even decided to. That's not weakness. That's training. You were trained.

The good news is that focus can be retrained the same way, deliberately, and your devices can actually help instead of hurt.

Use focus modes. Both iPhone and Android let you silence everything except what matters for a set window. Turn one on, and the constant pull to switch quietly disappears for an hour. You'd be shocked how much your focus returns when nothing is allowed to interrupt it.

Put the phone in another room. Not face down on the desk, in another room. Studies keep showing that just having it visible, even off, drains your attention. Distance is a tool.

Start with short focused blocks and build up. Your attention is a muscle that got weak. Twenty-five minutes of single-tasking, then a break. Do it daily and it genuinely strengthens, the same way it genuinely weakened.

You didn't lose your focus. It was taken, a little at a time. And the same deliberate attention that trained it away can train it right back.

"Focus is boring, switching is rewarding, you were trained." That explained ten years of my life in one sentence.

Mike

Put my phone in another room for one work block today. Got more done in 25 min than all morning. Scary.
