You Can Use Technology on Your Own Terms. Here's How the Defaults Work Against You.
I spent years building the systems that decide how your apps behave out of the box. So let me tell you something most people never think about: every default setting on your phone was chosen by someone, and it was almost never chosen for you.
Notifications on by default. Autoplay on by default. The feed as the first thing you see, by default. Read receipts, activity status, endless scroll, all switched on, all quietly working to keep you engaged longer. None of that is an accident, and none of it is the only way. They're defaults, and defaults can be changed.
Using technology on your own terms just means going in and reclaiming those choices. It's the single highest-leverage thing you can do for your digital wellbeing, and it takes about fifteen minutes.
Turn off notifications for everything that isn't a real person. If it's an app trying to pull you back, not a human trying to reach you, it doesn't get to interrupt your life.
Turn off autoplay, everywhere. Autoplay exists so you never have to make a decision to keep watching, the decision gets made for you. Kill it, and suddenly you're choosing again.
Turn off read receipts and activity status if they make you anxious. You do not owe anyone a live feed of when you're online. That pressure was designed in. You can design it out.
Set your phone to grayscale, or at least move the attention-eating apps off your home screen. Make the good tools easy to reach and the traps a little harder.
Here's the mindset shift underneath all of it. You are not a passive user of your phone. You are the owner of it. The company set the defaults to serve the company. You're allowed to reset them to serve you, and once you do, the same device feels completely different, calmer, quieter, actually yours.
You don't have to quit technology to take back control of it. You just have to stop accepting settings someone else picked for their benefit, and start choosing the ones that are good for you.

Turned off autoplay everywhere after reading this. Instantly watching way less. Wild how much was just defaults.
You're not the only one who feels this.
